Today’s Tip: The “Safe Road” is Closed: Take Another Route!

Posted by Kevin Crews - The Career Strategist on August 13, 2010 in Job Tip |
Too many job seekers are taking the safe road towards their future opportunities because they are afraid of doing something that will jeopardize a potential interview or job offer.

Sound like you?

This "walking on egg-shells" mentality is actually preventing you from being considered by recruiters and hiring managers. In today's market, recruiters see hundreds of look-alikes and this approach won't separate you from your competition.

What's the point of this post? Take calculated risks. To be the successful job seeker, you need to understand the Hiring Manager's pain points and address the ways to solve their problems.

But how do you get invited to the dance to show your talents in the first place? It's by taking those calculated risks. Does that mean you have your resume copied onto a cake and delivered to the place of employment? NO... unless you're applying to be a pastry chef; then it's a smart calculated risk.

In other words, make sure the risk is associated with the job opportunity or company so that it demonstrates a well thought out plan to impress your new employer!

Today’s Tip: Great Time for an Interview!

Posted by Kevin Crews - The Career Strategist on August 12, 2010 in Job Tip |
With interviews coming far less often these days, you certainly want to make the best of each one that is offered to you. Some people "blow it" before the interview even begins.

When the recruiter calls you to inform you that the Hiring Manager would like to meet with you, your goal is to get that first "time-slot" in the morning - usually around 9:00 AM. This is when both you and the interviewer are awake and alert. Your minds have not been scrambled with the headaches that are certain to start appearing just as you're headed to the door for that lobster lunch with an over-aggressive vendor trying to sell you snake oil. Make it at 9:00 and you'll do fine!

Today’s Tip: Obviously It’s Page 2

Posted by Kevin Crews - The Career Strategist on August 11, 2010 in Job Tip |
Often clients tell me about the advice that they've been given by numerous people. It seems that most "professional resume writers" are giving out the standard advice that used to work but is not successful in today's job market.

For example, only a few of us know that the reason you once needed to write your name and "Page 2" on your resume was because of early fax machines that used thermal paper rolls. After faxing your resume, the sheets often curled up and fell to the floor. Without your name and that goofy "Page 2" on the second page, the person picking the pages up off the floor had no way of knowing which pages went with which.

Here's how to spot a resume writer who hasn't kept up to date on their craft - ask them if you should include "Page 2" and your name on the second page. If they say yes, ask them why they believe that. If they give you a decent answer and not the "that's the way it is supposed to be done," then fine. Otherwise keep searching until you find someone who says "no".
